Biography:
Edwin Bennett Brierley Newton was born in Chester in 1873, receiving his early education in Eccles before matriculating at the University of London in 1890. An engineer by profession, he received his training in Manchester and Carlisle, and was elected a Fellow of the Society in 1897. In 1898 he entered the service of the Metropolitan Borough of Paddington, and was promoted to Borough Surveyor in 1901, being at that time one of the youngest engineers to hold so important a position in the municipal world. He continued in this office until the War, joining the Army in April 1915 with a commission in the Glamorgan Fortress Engineers. At the end of 1916 he went to France as Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers (134 Army Troops Coy), and survived until 1918, when he was reported missing. Newton was eventually recorded as 'killed in action' on 10 April 1918, at Armentières, at the age of 45 years.
