Making Maps - George Bellas Greenough's mapping of the British Isles

GBG title

One of the more significant collections held by the Society’s Library is the map collection of our first President George Bellas Greenough (1778-1855). Bequeathed to the Society on his death, it is an important record of Greenough’s attempts at understanding and interpreting the geology of much of the then known world.

This exhibition highlights Greenough’s mapping activities for the British Isles, principally the three editions of his ‘Geological Map of England & Wales’ (1820, 1840 & 1865) but also the unpublished maps of Scotland and Ireland in his collection.
