Information for Supporters
All applicants for Chartered Geologist (CGeol) and Chartered Scientist (CSci) are required to have ONE professionally qualified Supporter who has current, first-hand knowledge of the professional standing and competencies of the Applicant, preferably over the 3 years prior to the application.
For CGeol applicants, Supporters should preferably be CGeols. We accept other professional qualifications such as CEng, and various ones from recognised overseas professional bodies, provided that this has been agreed with the Society in advance.
For CSci, the Supporter must hold the CSci title.
If a Chartered Supporter cannot be identified, please contact the Chartership Office for further advice at chartership@geolsoc.org.uk
It is important for a Supporter to be professionally qualified.
Being professionally qualified helps the Supporter provide a professional opinion of the applicant’s competencies and makes them better placed to advise as to whether the applicant is ready for Chartership, as opposed to just being eligible to apply.
Their guidance is crucial in ensuring the applicant's best chance of success with their application.
If a Supporter thinks that the applicant is not yet ready for Chartership we expect you will discuss this with them and we hope you will help them to gain the additional experience or understanding necessary for a successful application.
Should an applicant, that you have supported, be deferred it is important that you discuss the notes and advice received from their Scrutineers. This will help them maximise their chances of success with a further application.
Supporters are asked to complete an assessment report form in which they comment on the applicant’s experience, knowledge and abilities against the seven CGeol or five CSci Chartership Competency criteria, as appropriate.
Submit your supporter statement (AD5) here
We also encourage Supporters to review the Forms and Guidance provided to Applicants and Scrutineers:
Begin your journey towards accreditation as a Chartered Geologist (CGeol) or Chartered Scientist (CSci).
Scrutineers are experienced Chartered Geologists or Chartered Scientists who help assess new applications for Chartered status.
