When it was suggested that an account of the geology of Hadrian’s Wall be produced it seemed a pity to limit it to the central sector: an account of the geology of the Wall from sea to sea across the isthmus of northern England would be so much more satisfying. It has been no hardship to become better aquainted with the eastern and western sectors of the Wall where there are interesting sediments and antiquities even if the scenery is less spectacular.
