The Holman’s Test Mine was opened in 1882 by the Holman Brothers engineering firm and was developed to showcase and test rock drills and other equipment for commercial use in Cornish tin and Welsh coal mines. Camborne School of Mines utilised the mine for teaching purposes from the 1920’s onwards and took over the mine completely following the closure of Holman’s Ltd.

This trip will take people underground at Holman’s to show how the mine has been developed into a teaching facility, being utilised for training and research in mining techniques, tunnelling, surveying, geological mapping, blasting and vibration analysis, as well as more exclusive research in renewable energy, nuclear waste disposal and biosciences.  There will also be an opportunities to see typical styles of mineralisation that were mined for tin and copper in Cornwall.

Following the underground tour people are welcome to come along to the Heartlands project in Pool.  Heartlands is the result of a £35 million regeneration project on a derelict mining site which is now part of the World Heritage Site.  Here we will stop for lunch in the Red River Café, and the visit the mining museum which is situated in the buildings that are part of Robinson’s Shaft.  Admission to the museum is free.
