The Great Southwell landslip of 1734 was a toppling failure. In dealing with slope instability in the UK, we are most often concerned with slides and flows: toppling is usually confined to rock cliffs and steep slopes. The Southwell landslide is an unusual feature, and it is readily accessible for a visit.

However, to understand what can be seen today it is important to understand the history of, in particular, quarrying for the Portland Limestone and dumping quarry waste. As the landslide occurs in a particular location, geological control was important, and the presentation will go some way to dispelling misconceptions over the mechanics.
