Start Time: 11 am - the trip is expected to finish at around 4pm.
The Chaldon Quarries are an extensive series of workings with around 17,000 metres of passages having been recorded. They yielded Reigate Stone (Upper Greensand), which has been used from as far back as the 13th & 14th Centuries for numerous prestigious buildings including Westminster Palace, The Tower of London and Windsor Castle.
Our guide for the day will be Peter Burgess. Peter is a member of the Wealden Cave and Mine Society and is an active caver and mine-explorer.
This field trip is a follow-up to Peter’s talk presented to the South East Regional Group in March 2019 “Chaldon Quarries, Surrey – Dating the Workings”
Our visit will be an opportunity to go down into the workings and learn more from Peter about their history, including the challenges of dating the various galleries.
You will need to have sturdy footwear and please bear in mind that conditions underground will be muddy and there may be narrow passages to climb through. Hard hats and lamps will be provided.
You will also need to bring a packed lunch.
