The morning will be spent at Gilbert's Pit, Charlton, SE London where we will have an opportunity to inspect at close quarters the exposures of the Lambeth Group deposits. This former sand quarry has been preserved as a SSSI for its geological importance and is scientifically the most important Palaeogene site in London, enabling the Upnor Formation 'Lower Shelly Beds', Woolwich Formation 'Laminated Beds' and Harwich Formation (Blackheath Beds) to be seen at their best.

We will then travel to the Brunel Museum, Rotherhithe, SE London for lunch before visiting the museum to learn about the problems these deposits posed to Marc and Isambard Kingdom Brunel during construction of the Thames Tunnel.

Our visit will include an opportunity to visit the construction shaft at the southern end of the Thames Tunnel. This was the worlds first recorded application of the use of a caisson system.
