President's Day 2013

xvbPresident’s Day at Burlington House on 5 June began with the Annual General Meeting at 11am followed by a buffet lunch with the award winners.

The recipients of the major medals gave a short talk on their subject, and the Awards Ceremony was followed by presentations by the Lyell, Murchison and William Smith medallists (details below).

Paula J. Reimer (Lyell Medal)

Professor at Queen’s University, Belfast.
Talk title: Calibrating the Radiocarbon Timescale.


Pete Kokelaar (Murchison Medal)

George Herdman Professor of Geology at the University of Liverpool.
Talk title: Understanding Avalanche Mobility.


Martin Jackson (William Smith Medal)

Dr Martin Jackson of the Bureau of Economic Geology at the University of Texas at Austin.
Talk title: Origin and Evolution of Allochthonous Salt Sheets.

Kurt Lambeck (Wollaston Medal)

Professor of Geophysics, The Australian National University: 
Talk title: Of Ice and Land, Sea and Strand: Sea Level During Glacial Cycles

  • Editor's note:  Sadly, owing to an unfortunate diary mix-up, Kurt Lambeck was not present for the presentation on 5 June 2013.  He delivered a public lecture at Burlington Housse on 25 September 2013, at which the presentation was finally made.
