Jurassic culture

Episode 19

Ammonite

With the eyes of the world on the London 2012 Games, the Jurassic Coast - 95 miles of coastline between Exmouth and Swanage - has been the backdrop to Weymouth and Portland’s sailing and windsurfing events.

Some have criticised the 'Cultural Olympiad' for leaving out science, but there has been no shortage of science on show here. From May to September, coastal and gateway towns in Dorset and East Devon are hosting the Jurassic Coast Earth Festival, hoping to show off the scientific and cultural importance of the region.

But why is Lyme Regis so important? Sarah talks to Richard Edmonds, Earth Science Manager with the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site Team, and Cindy Howells, Collections Manager at the National Museum of Wales, to find out.
