Dr Andres Payo PhD MSc, Coastal Resilience and Geohazard researcher, British Geological Survey

Dr Andres Payo is the lead of the Coasts & Estuaries programme at the British Geological Survey. Andres is an internationally recognised coastal geoscientist who specialises in quantitative geomorphology applied to coastal protection against flooding and coastal erosion at decadal and longer time scales. Using systems of systems approach, he is interested on the use of long–term analytical capacity to avoid maladaptation of long–lived infrastructure systems. In collaboration with academic and non–academic partners, Andres has developed a number of quantitative tools that support coastal stakeholder spatial planning. For example, his system approach to soil salinization in low–lying agricultural areas is now being used by the government of Bangladesh to explore different interventions for poverty alleviation. He has contributed to the sediment transport module of the Cross Shore model used by the USA Army Corp of Engineers to assess the beach/dune change during storm conditions and posterior recovery. He is the lead developer of the Coastal Modelling Environment (CoastalME) software that incorporate sub-bottom properties and high detailed digital terrain models to assess the risk of coastal flooding and coastal erosion over decades to centuries time scales. He is engaged in, and open to, collaborations with top quality academic institutions, consultants and government agencies in UK and abroad.

Event description

BGS Coasts and Estuaries provides independent and expert geoscientific tools and advice for collaborative decision making to assess different adaptation options for coastal flooding and erosion. The Coasts & Estuaries program aims to make our coasts and estuaries more resilient to coastal geohazards, help the transition from grey to green engineering, ensure that the built environment is adaptable to today’s and tomorrow’s climate and to minimise the impacts due to the legacy of anthropic activities on the coastal zone. We do this by combining the use of innovative 4D simulation models and cost-effective monitoring approaches (i.e. from space and using non-intrusive survey methods) to quantitatively assess the effects of different adaptation options against coastal flooding and coastal erosion (for example non-active intervention, managed realignment, hold the line, advance the line) with an emphasis on the transition from traditional grey engineering (such as hold the line with hard defences) to more green engineering (a combination of sand-scaping and giving space to coastal processes). This lecture will provide an overview of the different recently completed and ongoing research, with special focus on the East Anglian coast and the Thames estuary area.
