Field Trip to High Island Reservoir

Date: 6 May 2023

The Field Trip to High Island Reservoir was successfully held on 6 May 2023, jointly organised by Geological Society of Hong Kong and the HKRG GSL. We thank the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark for providing the guided tour and arrangements. Special thanks to Geopark Officers Yu Nam and Alvin for their great explanations!

HKRG Annual Dinner 2023

Date: 3 February 2023

Over 100 Fellows of the Geological Society had celebrated another successful year for the HKRG after COVID19. Professor John Malpas, Founding Chair of the Department of Earth Sciences, The University of Hong Kong, announced to award a Joint Medal with Headquarters and the Geological Society of Hong Kong to recognise "Outstanding Contributions to Geoscience in Hong Kong".

Visit to Tseung Kwan O – Lam Tin Tunnel

Seminar on Cone Penetration Testing

Petroglyphs, Unconformities & Climate Change

HKRG warmly welcomes Prof. Steve Hencher again, to give a presentation on his recent studies. Steve is Emeritus Professor of Engineering Geology at the University of Leeds and Honorary Professor at Hong Kong University.  He spent 15 years working in Hong Kong; five with the Geotechnical Control Office and ten as Head of Geotechnics in Halcrow.

John Talbot's Visit

John Talbot, the Vice President of Chartership, visited Hong Kong. He arranged a Chartership workshop for early career geoscientists and a seminar for Sponsors and Scrutineers. Both evenings commenced with short presentations, followed by an extensive discussion and a general Q&A session.

HKRG Annual Dinner 2019

Over 100 Fellows of the Geological Society had celebrated another successful year for the Hong Kong Regional Group on 25 January 2019. The occasion was marked by a Chinese banquet at the Craigengower Cricket Club, where we were very fortunate to be joined by our guest Dr. Richard Hughes.

Dr. Richard Hughes shared his view on “The Role of Learned Societies and Professional Bodies in the 21st Century”. In addition to the talk, the other highlight includes our traditional “Living Geology” pub quiz.

This year we have 8 companies sponsoring corporate tables, namely Arcadis, Arup, Dragages, Fugro, Gammon, HKU DES, Lam Geotechnics, and Mott MacDonald.

A Geological Model for Offshore Tin Placers

Date: 12 December 2018

Speaker: Prof. Wyss Yim

Prof. Yim talked about his geological model of offshore tin placers based on multiple geological factors including global sea-level history in the northeastern Tasmanian tin field. He also reported the GSL conference ‘Marine Minerals: A new resource for the 21st century?’ held at late October 2018 in Burlington House.

A Christmas Gathering was held after the seminar among fellows, students, and professionals.

This event aims at providing social networking for the HKRG. Mr Kevin Lo from GEO talked about his geological mapping project “The Geology of the Sandy Ridge Area, Northern New Territories”. The recent findings provide new insights into the structural history of the northern New Territories.

Introductory Course on Core Logging

Date: 8 September 2018

Speaker: Edison Tse

The HKRG organised annual Core Logging Course as part of commitment to developing standards. The course was led by Edison Tse of the Geological Survey of Hong Kong. The practical session was held in Fugro's Core Depot at Kam Tin. Participants came from 14 Consulting & Contracting companies within the private sector in Hong Kong. HK is quite unique in that almost half the young Geologists are women.

This event aims at providing social networking for the HKRG. Olivia Lam talked about her project – “Petrographic Study & Geological Model of Contact between Meta-tuff & Meta-sedimentary Rock in the Northern NT” to help kick the process off. This is a unique study for a young geologist using thin sections and petrography.

Pushing Forward – the History, Challenges and Future of Cone Penetration Testing in Hong Kong

CPTDate: 7 May 2018

Speaker: William Bond

This seminar was jointly organised with the Professional Branch of the Geological Society of Hong Kong. William Bond introduced the aspects of Cone Penetration Testing (CPT) and he shared his view on the states of CPT in Hong Kong. Over 60 fellows participated in the seminar and the response was positive. The seminar was followed by a discussion among the professional practitioners. HKRG is looking forward to arranging a course/workshop related to this topic in the near future.
