Comp terms and conditions

  1. The competition is open to all.

  2. The competition closes at midnight on 17 March 2019. 

  3. Entrants can submit as many entries as they wish. 

  4. Entries may be submitted jointly. 

  5. Entries may be submitted by post or by email. Postal entries should be sent to:

    Email entries should be sent to education@geolsoc.org.uk, with the subject heading ‘Geoscientist Cover Competition’. 


  7. Entries are welcome in any physical or electronic medium. Electronic files should be of a standard file format (i.e. not require any proprietary or specialist software to read them). 

  8. All entries must be submitted with the entrant’s name, address and a brief description of their entry. 

  9. Every effort will be made to return entries submitted by post if requested, although this cannot be guaranteed. 

  10. The winning entry will feature as the cover of the May 2019 issue of Geoscientist magazine, which will mark the 100th anniversary of female Fellows of the Geological Society, and full credit will be given.

    The winning entrant will also receive £100 in prize money and a year’s subscription to Geoscientist magazine (if not already a recipient.) In the event that no one suitable cover image is received, the Geological Society reserves the right not to select a winner. 


  11. All entries must be the original work of the entrant(s) and must not infringe the rights of any other party.

    Where text, images or other content is quoted or reproduced, this must be credited and the entrant(s) must have permission (where appropriate) to use this content.

    Entrants must be the sole owner of copyright in all other materials and content submitted, and must have obtained permission of any people featured in their entries (or their parent/guardians in children under 16 are featured).

    Entrants must not have breached any laws in preparing or submitting their entries.


  12. Entrants will retain copyright in their submissions.

    By entering the competition, all entrants grant to the Geological Society the right to publish or display their submissions and any extracts or images of these submissions, with full credit given, at the Geological Society’s premises and events, on its website and social media channels, in Geoscientist magazine and in other relevant marketing and publicity materials.
