All of the UNESCO Global Geoparks in the UK are offering a wide range of exciting activities throughout the school holidays. Just some of the best ones have been listed below:

GeoMôn UNESCO Global Geopark

Working with partners including Amlwch Town Council and Amlwch Industrial Heritage Trust, visitors to GeoMôn UNESCO Global Geopark can take advantage of a free ‘hop-on hop-off’ bus service. The service will allow visitors to see attractions such as Copper Kingdom in Amlwch and provide an easy way to explore not just the geological heritage of the isle of Anglesey but the associated natural, cultural and built heritage as well.

Marble Arch Caves UNESCO Global Geopark

The annual Rock Detectives workshops will be taking place as part of Irish Heritage Week on the 18 and 25 August. Aimed at children from 3 to 11 years old the workshops offer a fun and interactive way of exploring the geological heritage of the Geopark through hands-on activities and short field visits.

This year the workshops will be focusing on resources particularly those found within the Geopark.

North Pennines AONB UNESCO Global Geopark

Not so much ‘Earth’ science but more space science, the North Pennines AONB UNESCO Global Geopark enjoys some of the darkest skies in England and will use this to full advantage as part of their Perseid Meteor Shower event at Killhope Lead Mining Museum on 12 August.

The event will include meteor watching and space-themed activities (for kids and adults) and when you could see up to 60 and 70 shooting starts per hour.

North West Highlands UNESCO Global Geopark

On 22 August the North West Highlands UNESCO Global Geopark is organising a Deep Time Walk at the Knockan Crag, National Nature Reserve owned and managed by Scottish Natural Heritage. Complete with a visitor centre and interactive exhibits, Knockan Crag is the ideal place to get an introduction to the impressive landscapes of the NW Highlands, how it formed and why it looks the way it does as you travel in time from 3 billion years ago right up to the present day.
