The discovery of a meteroite ejecta layer at the base Palaeocene lavas on the Isle of Skye were initially believed to be derived from a pyroclastic flow. However, the discovery of exotic mineral phases later confirmed this layer is the result of a meteorite impact, now dated to just over 60 Ma years ago. It is believed the event has significant implications for the volcanic history of the Isle of Skye.
