Based on the 2018 Glossop Lecture, Dr Kevin Privett guides us through an evidence-based approach to reducing geological uncertainty and improving understanding, drawing on his experience in the profession.
Dr Privett's career as a consultant in the geotechnical, mining and geo-environmental sectors has spanned the 40+ years that engineering geology has been well-established as a discipline in its own right.
The past is the key to the future: a better understanding of site history leads to better predictions of engineering behaviour of the ground. Engineering geology is a multi-faceted discipline that is ever-expanding, and there are three interlocking themes that enhance the skills of an engineering geological consultant:
- Working with multiple disciplines, being versatile and adaptable to change
- Possessing a wide range of knowledge and experience
- Using lessons of the past
Dr Privett will illustrate (through the use of a range of case histories) how these themes can provide multiple lines of evidence which reduce uncertainty and provide better understanding of projects in engineering geology.
