An Introduction to UK Ground Improvement Practice

Ground improvement is a rapidly and continuing developing discipline of ground engineering, offering a cost effective alternative to deep foundations in a range of ground conditions. This short course provides an introduction to the more commonly used ground improvement techniques in the UK, namely vibro stone columns and dynamic compaction. Focus will be on how and where each technique works, together with current best practice relating to design, specification, testing, quality control and sustainability aspects; supported where  appropriate by case history information and lessons learnt. There will be opportunity for participants to engage with some workshop questions to put theory into practice. The course should appeal to graduates and post graduates, together with those working in the ground engineering and geoenvironmental sector, wishing to gain more insight of  the more common UK ground improvement techniques and their application.

Learning Objectives

Vibro ground improvement techniques

  • Differences between vibro compaction and vibro stone columns
  • Applications of vibro compaction and vibro stone columns
  • Site geotechnical characterisation for vibro ground improvement
  • Design, quality control and testing for vibro ground improvement
  • Lessons learnt from unsatisfactory vibro stone column ground improvement performance

Dynamic Compaction ground improvement

  • Differences between dynamic compaction and rapid impact compaction
  • Applications of dynamic and rapid impact compaction
  • Site geotechnical characterisation for dynamic and rapid impact compaction
  • Design, quality control and testing for dynamic and rapid impact compaction
