During the 19th Century, Bath was considered to be the home of geology. In the 1850s the public’s curiosity for natural history saw the founding within The Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution (BRLSI) of both a Geological Museum and Natural History Museum. Incrementally, the BRLSI has evolved to encompass lecture programmes, collections and a historic library across a number of specialisms. Our training will be in the beautiful Elwin Room and adjoining Lonsdale Room with its wall-size cast of a Plesiosaur.

Event Type

In-person with some sessions available virtually via Zoom. Contributes to CPD.

Event Overview

Chartership Assessors at The Geological Society are Chartered Geologists and Chartered Scientists who have experience in assessing the fulfilment of competency criteria needed to achieve chartered status. As one of the key volunteer groups with the Society, assessors are able to provide advice and support for chartership applicants, and undertake application reviews and interviews.

We are hosting this chartership assessor event to provide updates and guidance to assessors on the application review process. It will also provide an opportunity for assessors to convene and share their experiences in carrying out reviews. This will include breakout groups that will focus on competency standards using worked examples, both within and across different areas of technical expertise.

We also welcome any chartered Fellows who would like to become a Chartership Assessor to join us. We always welcome new applications, and this event would provide the ideal occasion to meet other Assessors and get up to speed. In the meantime, if you would also like to apply to become an Assessor, you can do so here.

Registration and Fees

Places at this event are limited to existing Chartered Fellows of The Geological Society who are either already registered as Chartership Assessors or who wish to find out more about becoming an Assessor. We are keen to grow our community of Assessors and encourage any Fellows who have now been Chartered for several years to join us.

Registration will close Friday 28 June 2024.

Registration is free to attend.

We offer a limited number of travel bursaries (maximum £50pp) for those in financial hardship. Please contact [email protected] (Please note you may be required to provide details/evidence to support your application for this support.)
