You are invited to take part in the Geological Society's 2020 National Schools Geology Challenge!

The Yorkshire regional heat is taking place from 10.00am to 3.00pm on Friday 10 January 2020, and will be held at the School of Earth and Environment, University of Leeds, Leeds, LS2 9JT.

About the competition

  • Schools all across the UK can enter the challenge by first competing in their regional heat - this heat is for schools covered by the Yorkshire Regional Group of the Geological Society
  • The challenge is aimed at Year 12/13 students studying geology or geography (studying A-level geology is not a requirement to enter the competition)
  • Groups of up to six students can compete in the regional heat; the winning group of the regional heat will then progress to the national final
  • Multiple groups from a single school are permitted
  • The national final is hosted by the Geological Society in Burlington House, London, where the group will compete against schools from across the UK! This year the national final is being held on Thursday 19 March 2020

About the Yorkshire regional heat

Registration for this year's challenge has now closed.

The day will involve student posters and presentations, an interactive session in the University's Earth Visualisation Lab, a geology themed quiz and a ‘Careers in Geoscience’ presentation.

Participating schools will need to submit a student group to produce an A1 poster on the Geological Society’s 2020 theme of ‘Life’. The student group will also prepare a five-minute presentation on a chosen geology related topic (although it is advised to link the presentation to the poster and stick to the theme of ‘Life’).

As part of the presentation, groups will also take part in a question-and-answer session, with questions from a panel of leading geologists in academia and industry.
