Thinking about attending the virtual VMSG 2021 conference (1300 to 1700 hrs GMT/UTC; 6th- 8th January 2021)? Wondering if this is the right event for you?

The Volcanic and Magmatic Studies Group (VMSG) aims to facilitate discussion, in an inclusive environment, amongst researchers with interests in volcanology, igneous petrology, geochemistry and allied fields. We aim to provide a supportive environment where all in the community are welcome and valued, and are keen to promote balance in terms of gender, ethnicity, religion, geographical location, physical ability, sexual orientation, socio-economic background and others. Our interest is in the science, and in your work.

Abstracts and Programme

We welcome presentations on all areas of volcanic and magmatic related phenomena from a geophysical, geochemical, petrological, economic, societal, or theoretical perspective.

When submitting your abstract you’ll be asked to request a talk or a flash presentation and to provide up to 5 keywords; your abstracts will dictate the formulation of sessions. All topics have a home at v_VMSG 2021! Submit your abstract here

We will have keynote talks from our recent award winners: Prof Ed Llewellin (Durham University) and Dr Alisa Naismith (University of Bristol), and from our new Postdoc Keynote Awardee.

We will not have posters this year due to the virtual format of the conference. Instead, we will have talks (12 + 3 mins) and flash presentations (1 min).

The flash presentations will be in video format, where you can introduce yourself, your research interests, and scientific passions. This could be for new PhD students or postdocs, those looking for their next position, those wanting to share ‘hot off the press results’, or new ideas, or seeking to advertise MSc or PhD projects for 2021.

You can submit your abstract here. To apply for the Postdoc Keynote Awardee talk, please e-mail this form to Sarah Woodcock at the Geological Society.

Abstracts are due by 30th November 2020 (5 pm GMT/UTC). Notifications will be sent to speakers (talk, flash, and postdoc awardee) by 4th December 2020.

Social Events

  • Pre-meeting virtual Yoga session every morning of the conference
  • Two virtual social events on the 6th and 7th January: a Quiz and an interactive volcano Movie night.

Virtual Fieldtrip

We aren’t letting a global pandemic get in the way of a conference fieldtrip. The pre-conference fieldtrip will happen in January, all from the comfort of your own computer screen.

If that wasn’t enough, there will be a conference workshop focused on how to build virtual fieldtrips (also in January). Just in time for any staff planning University virtual fieldtrips over the Spring season!
