This presentation will cover an introduction to Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), including definitions and structure. Their behaviour in soil depends on many factors including soil composition, moisture content and particle size, all of which will affect their rate of dispersion and degradation.

An explanation of diffusion coefficients will also be covered, as this shows how different VOCs will be dispersed at different rates. A discussion on sampling will also be included, covering disturbed soil samples, cores and groundwater, followed by details of analytical procedures – GDFID and GCMS. The final section of the presentation will cover remediation with some example case studies.
