As part of the Mendip ROCKS! Festival of Geology, Dr Peter Hardy will lead three days of escorted field trips/lectures to discover the 450 million year history of the making of Mendip Rocks.
Dr Peter Hardy, author of 'The Geology of Somerset', and staff from Somerset Earth Science Centre will provide the tuition and minibus tours. The three days will cover the cumulative geological history of the Mendips, so it is ideal but not essential to attend all three days.
Day 1: Wednesday 12 October, 10am - 4pm
Field trip from Somerset Earth Science Centre. Silurian, Devonian & Lower Carboniferous including tours to Moon's Hill & Whatley Quarries, also Jurassic inferior oolite at Doulting Quarry. Boots and waterproofs/lunch needed.
Day 2: Thursday 13 October, 10am - 4pm
Somerset Earth Science Centre and field trip. Upper Carboniferous coal measures/lead mining and coal measures. Visit to Charterhouse and Burrington Combe. Boots/waterproofs/lunch & drinks needed.
Day 3: Friday 14 October, 10am - 4pm
Field trip from Somerset Earth Science Centre to Sand Point - Carboniferous volcanics of the western Mendips. Boots/waterproofs/lunch & drinks needed.
