Science related activities take place in Sidmouth regularly throughout the year. The Festival in October comprises a whole week - plus a bit - of special events geared towards the whole community, both in town and in the local schools. Most events are suitable for inquisitive minds of all ages, except where specifically stated.
This year’s festival is themed ‘Science in our lives’, and as ever will include a focus on geology. A selection of Earth science themed events is listed below, but many more talks, activities, walks and school visits are taking place throughout Sidmouth.

Interactive Science Trail by the Sea
Time & Venue: 11am, The Seafront, the Ham and the Kingswood & Devoran Hotel, Sidmouth Town Centre
Join EDDC Countryside Wardens, Sidmouth in Bloom, Sidmouth Arboretum, Sidmouth Lifeboat, Sidmouth Museum in the Arches and others on an interactive science trail along the sea shore. Investigate rock pools, find out what plants grow along the shore, have a taste of seaweed, and more. Bring along any rocks you would like identifying to The Arches, Sidmouth Museum.
Talks throughout the day in the Kingswood Room at the Kingswood and Devoran Hotel to include:
- 11.00am - Managing the Jurassic Coast (Jurassic Coast Trust)
- 12.00 noon - Impact of Climate Change on the North Atlantic Ocean (Prof Toby Sherwin)
- 1.00pm - The Sidmouth and East Beach Management Plan (Alan Frampton)
- 2.00pm - Impact of Climate Change on Sidmouth (Prof Brian Golding)
