In this evening's talk, Dr Mike Jones (Water Resources & Process Modelling Lead, Thames Water) will be explaining how Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) is helping Thames Water to engineer sustainable and climate-resilient public water supplies for London.

Thames Water has the largest operational managed aquifer recharge (MAR) scheme in the UK, contributing 140 Ml/d to London’s water supply from the confined Chalk-Basal Sands aquifer. Other MAR opportunities have been explored in this aquifer, but Thames Water is continuing to develop and test an ASR scheme in the confined Lower Greensand aquifer of north Kent. This is different in concept and in scale, targeting only a 5 Ml/d contribution to London’s water supply.

In his talk, our speaker will show how the scope of this ASR scheme is influenced by the constraints and opportunities exerted by existing infrastructure, the quality and quantity of the recharge water available, and the hydrogeology.
