Borrowing a Map

The Map Room

The Geological Society Library Map Collection is one of the few lending map libraries in the world. Most maps can be borrowed by our Fellows and Corporate Affiliates.

For Fellows the rules are:

  • A maximum of six maps at once
  • Items are loaned for four weeks at time
  • Unlimited renewals provided not required by another reader

For both Candidate Fellows and Corporate Affiliate members the rules are the same except for how many items can be borrowed.  Candidate Fellows can only borrow three items at one time, while Corporate Affiliates can borrow twelve items at time, and we prefer this to be done via the library representative in your organisation.

If you can't make it to the Library, we can post items to you.

The Library expects that maps are treated with great care and returned in the condition in which they were originally lent.  We are trying to preserve our collection so it can continue to be used for future generations of geologists.  Maps that get too damaged have to removed from circulation to our users.

Most damage can be repaired if caught in time, so please report any damage to maps you have on loan.  Most of all please do not not fold any maps that we store flat.  Folding or re-folding maps damages them, shortening their lifespan considerably.
