Guided walks

We've organised a number of guided walks exploring London's hidden history, Stonehaven's costal geology and the 'Rock and Spindle' in St Andrews. Find out more and book your place below.

London

  • 7 & 8 October: London's hidden history

    London is one of the world’s great historical cities, with a rich heritage stretching back well over a thousand years. But the stones that make up London’s great buildings tell a story that is more mysterious and much older – a story of volcanoes, crashing continents, and ancient creatures. Join geologist Matt Loader for a one hour walk around the capital to discover the hidden history in the rocks of London’s landmarks.

    When? 12 pm

    Where? Meet us at the Piccadilly entrance to the Geological Society of London, directly opposite Fortnums and Mason, W1J0BG.

    Cost: Free, but places are limited. Book in advance by emailing ESWUK@geolsoc.org.uk

  • 12 October: 'From Eros to Eternity: Piccadilly’s rock heritage': Join UCL's Ruth Siddall for a two hour tour of the some of the hidden gems of Piccadilly!

    A special walk being arranged in collaboration with London Walks

    Where? Meet us at the Piccadilly entrance to the Geological Society of London, directly opposite Fortnums and Mason, W1J0BG.

  • 12 October: 'Coast, Rocks and Boundary Faults': Explore Stonehaven's amazing coastal geology with layered, melted and dramatic folded rocks revealing ancient mountain building and a lost ocean floor. Get up close to the Highland Boundary Fault with local expert Peter Craig who will lead you through the story of the rocks.

  • 12 October: Community geology walk: A walk exploring the 'Rock and Spindle', including a geocache, treasure hunting and refreshments - come dressed in your finest geology outfits! Organised by the Geolsoc committee at the University of St Andrews. Contact Emily Carter for further information.

    Where? Meet at East Sands Leisure Centre.
