Geoscience Everyday Competition

THE COMPETITION IS NOW CLOSED

In line with the theme of Earth Science Week 2023, “Geoscience Innovating for Earth and People”, we are hosting a competition titled 'Geoscience Everyday' where participants are invited to explore the way geoscience influences society and the many ways that Earth science innovations benefit people and the planet.

Three prizes will be awarded: 1st place (£150), 2nd (£100) and 3rd (£50).

A piece of media (in any form) plus a short accompanying storytelling paragraph, forming a narrative that captures the question... "How does geoscience influence society?".

We are interested in the impact of Earth science on the everyday world around you – what can you see in your local area? Across both rural and urban spaces, this may be a piece of technology or a technique that helps your community through, for example, improving water quality and availability, soil health and erosion, food security or natural resource extraction. It can cover any issue and any location – perhaps even captured in your local park.

We won’t be judging entries on the quality of equipment entrants have to hand, so feel free to use what you can find to produce your work, whether that be a phone or an old family camera (as long as it can be sent to us electronically).

We encourage you to be as creative as you can, presenting your work through whichever form of media feels most comfortable for you. This could be a short video, photo, poem, or even a piece of artwork. The options are open…so think creatively!

The key piece of your entry is the story you have to tell and the narrative that accompanies your media piece. We want to see how creatively and uniquely you can demonstrate Earth science in your everyday life.

  • Why does this story matter?
  • Why is it important to you?
  • What does it mean for others?
  • Why you have chosen your topic? Why the art form?
  • What does Earth science mean for you and your community? Think critically.

The creativity you display in this written section will be assessed with equal weight alongside the media entry. This can be submitted in an accompanying short paragraph (up to 300 words).

  • Make sure to read the Terms and Conditions for full details of competition rules prior to submission.
  • The competition will open at 9am on Thursday 8 June 2023 and closes at 23:59pm on Monday 21 August 2023.

We look forward to seeing, reading, watching and enjoying your submissions!
