About the role:
The overall purpose of this post is to support the Head of Events in delivering the Business strategy, taking the lead on management of the Training Course programme from inception to completion. The position will work closely with the Training Course Committee to secure a pipeline of new courses alongside successful delivery of existing and repeat courses, ensuring that financial targets are achieved.
Key responsibilities and accountabilities:
- To develop effective working relationships with society stakeholders, events team, Training Course Committee, Professional Committee, Chartership Officer and wider teams at the society including Publishing House to maximise opportunities for courses.
- To lead on Training Course Committee meetings creating agenda’s and keeping members regularly apprised.
- To report on key areas in the Professional Committee meeting.
- To successfully meet annual sales target for Training courses providing regular feedback on performance to Head of Events and Training Course Committee.
- To work closely with our Marketing Team to prepare detailed marketing plans and high-quality designed materials for promoting courses to delegates.
- Total end-to-end management of course Speakers, ensuring these relationships are nurtured and all documentation is processed promptly and accurately.
- To ensure that all courses are accessible and organised to Society standards.
- To co-line manage the Events Coordinator with the Head of Events, providing regular feedback and support to ensure their ongoing development.

Planetary Science Education Assistant
Contract: Full-time (Monday to Friday), 12-month fixed term contract

Salary: Up to £26,775 per annum
About the role:
The Geological Society has a core mission, which is focused on supporting Earth and Planetary scientists, growing interest in the natural world, and connecting science, the profession and society. Our education and outreach activities support this work across all five of our science themes. Planetary Science is one of these five key themes, and as such, we are working to better engage with our community in this area, and the opportunities that this sector can provide.
Our new project, ‘Using planetary science & space exploration to inspire future planetary geoscientists’ is generously funded by the UK Space Agency (UKSA), and aims to generate new resources and prospects for those aspiring to enter the planetary geosciences.
The Planetary Science Education Assistant will support the work of the wider UKSA project team and Education department to engage and educate new audiences about planetary geoscience and help to reverse the decline in university students taking on geoscience degrees. The assistant may also help to maintain day-to-day activities of the Education department, such as keeping in touch with school contacts, monitoring communication channels, and maintaining educational resources.
Key responsibilities:
- Lead on the investigation of current educational resources focused on planetary geoscience & space exploration, reporting gaps at different levels across the different subject areas where required. Identify opportunities for new, curriculum-linked resource provision.
- Work alongside the UKSA project team to interrogate the range of career opportunities available within planetary geoscience and space exploration, at various levels.
- Lead on the development of educational & careers resources focused on planetary geoscience and space exploration, supported by the wider USKA project team. (This will include tactile handling boxes with meteorites, analogue materials, and 3D printed asteroid models and impact craters, as well as paper-based and digital resources.)
- Provide administration for the UKSA project team, preparing meeting agendas and taking minutes, along with quarterly reporting on progress against agreed objectives.
- Work with the UKSA project team and external stakeholders to manage relationships and deliver collaborative projects where required.
- Attend external events (such as conferences, science festivals) with the project and/or Education teams, virtually or in person, representing the Society.
- Support the wider Education team in delivering workshops for school visits (primary and secondary age) focused on planetary geoscience & space exploration.
- Support the UKSA project and Education teams in the development and delivery of geoscience outreach via public engagement, particularly focused on planetary geoscience & space exploration.
- Carry out other responsibilities as required by the education and external relations teams.

Geoscientist Vacancy: Editor-in-Chief (Voluntary Role)
Duration: Five years, with option to extend for a further five years by mutual agreement
Location: Fully remote working
Compensation: This is an honorary role and no payment will be made (expenses for meeting attendance will be reimbursed)

Geoscientist is the quarterly Fellowship magazine of the Geological Society of London. It features a vibrant mix of science, opinion, news and more, and serves as a resource to the community, with articles that aim to stimulate thinking within and across fields of expertise.
Geoscientist is seeking an Editor-in-Chief to lead the editorial team from June 2024, and to help shape and deliver the magazine content over the next five years.
The Editor-in-Chief role is voluntary and requires a typical commitment of a day (~8 hours) per month. The role is fully remote, with contributions primarily achieved via email, with occasional meetings (in person or online) to liaise with the Editorial Team and Editorial Advisory Panel, review the magazine, and develop ideas for content. Additionally, at each Annual General Meeting of the Society, the Editor-in-Chief will report to the Fellows regarding the previous calendar year’s performance of Geoscientist.
