Geological Society Events

Film Night Lates

Join us in Earth Science Week 2023 for a one-of-a-kind screening of Jurassic Park (1993) at The Geological Society!

This year we celebrate the incredible blockbuster’s 30th Anniversary. In Steven Spielberg’s timeless classic, a wealthy businessman named John Hammond and a team of paleontologists have created a wildlife park of de-extinct dinosaurs. When industrial sabotage leads to a catastrophic shutdown of the park's power facilities and security precautions, a small group of visitors, including Hammond's grandchildren, struggle to survive and escape the now perilous island.

Arrive at our historical venue on Piccadilly for this exclusive event, take a seat in our intimate 150-person theatre, and settle in to watch a cinematic screening of Jurassic Park. There will be a free drinks reception from 6pm, with the film screening beginning at 7pm.

Join us for a unique evening of cinema!

This screening is aimed at University students and Early Career Scientists with a one hour drinks reception for mingling prior to the showing of the film.

Date: Wednesday 11 October 2023.

Time: 6:00-10:00pm.

Tickets are available to purchase here.

Watch as WALL.E’s life finds new meaning after meeting Eve, a sleek new search robot. Does a tiny robot have what it takes to make a difference to mankind?

The Geological Society is excited to have you for an adventurous movie and popcorn galore!

Host: London Geodiversity Partnership and London Natural History Society

Event details:

A 3.5 mile geotrail around Bedfords Park in North London looking at both the geology and the wild life, and how it is influenced by the underlying geology. The Park is interesting geologically because it is underlain by five different strata, the Tertiary London Clay, Claygate Beds and Bagshot Sand overlain in places by the much younger pre-Anglian
gravel and glacial till, relics of the Anglian icesheet that reached into London as far as Hornchurch 450,000 years ago.
There is a fine view over London from the Visitor Centre where the geology will be explained. An added
attraction is a dolerite boulder discovered locally in post-Anglian gravels and transported to the Visitor
Centre when the quarry ceased operating. It has been suggested that it originated from the Great Whin Sill
in Northumberland and was transported south by the ice and then washed out into the oldest of the postAnglian gravels close by as the ice melted.
By understanding the geology, we believe that an added layer of understanding of the Earth can be achieved.
