Welcome to the Map Room of the Geological Society!
The Geological Society has been collecting maps since its foundation in 1807. The Library's cartographic holdings expanded until the Map Room was created in the 1960s to hold all of the Library's map collections.
Today it holds over 40,000 sheets of geological mapping covering all parts of the globe.
Fellows of the Society are welcome to use the collections in the Map Room during the Library's normal opening hours of 9:30 am - 5:30 pm, Monday - Friday. The Map Room is situated through the Lyell Room on the first floor. Please sign in at the Library counter and ask the Librarian before using the collections.
Most maps in the collection can be borrowed by Fellows for four weeks at a time, just like the books in the Library. We can even post them out to you if you are unable to make it into London to view the maps in the Map Room.
The Map Librarian is on hand to advise on what we hold in our collections and what might be available online and through map suppliers. You can also search our map holdings using our Library catalogue, which is available on this website.
