This map of Norfolk was in the first atlas of geological county maps William Smith published (in January 1819). William Smith spent much of the period between 1801 and 1809 in Norfolk.  He was employed in the capacity of a civil engineer repairing the sea-breaches along the coastline.  In 1807 he composed a work entitled 'Description of Norfolk, its soil and substata. By W. Smith.'  It was intended to be published, but it was never completed and only published in its incomplete state.
