The exceptional winter rainfall stats for 2013/14 produced a rash of “sinkholes” that lead to
damage of buildings and threatened life across southern England. The main events occurred
in the Chilterns and North Downs areas causing widespread distress, inconvenience and
shock, but fortunately no casualties despite some close encounters!
Many of the resulting
holes were large and have been challenging to deal with, resulting in emergency responses,
expensive insurance claims and uninsured losses. Closer examination and investigation has
shown that most of the features have a man-made origin.
The talk will show a series of case
studies illustrating the nature and behaviour of the collapses, the follow-on investigations
and engineering solutions being adopted.
