The Petroleum Group, PESGB and AAPG are organising the Petroleum Geoscience Research Collaboration Showcase (PGRCS) as an independent international conference under the auspices of PETEX 2014. The PGRCS conference showcases the business challenges addressed by collaborative research projects, enables researchers to demonstrate societal and economic benefits from their research, and provides a forum for post-doctoral, PhD and MSc presentations.

This successful “conference within a conference” format has proved an excellent opportunity for industry and academia to meet, to get inspired and to develop future collaborative research links. There will be ample opportunity for graduates and potential future employers to connect. This year’s PGRCS includes an optional workshop in which PhD students and industry colleagues will explore ways to increase the impact of academic research across the industry.

Preference will be given to joint presentations by industrial sponsors and student/post-doc/academic researchers. This “buddy system” is intended to frame the industrial problem before technical results are reported and/or to conclude by showing the applied, economic benefits of the research. We also welcome overview presentations from the principal investigators of major Joint Industry Projects (JIPs).

Suggested themes include:

• Petroleum systems
• Stratigraphy and sedimentology
• Reservoir geology and engineering
• Structural geology and basin evolution
• Geophysical imaging and interpretation
• Unconventional energy and carbon sequestration
• Analogue and numerical modelling
• Novel techniques and applications
• Environmental impacts of petroleum activities
• Case histories of joint industry-academia research and knowledge transfer

This year the showcase will also include a ‘Collaboration Workshop’. This will be an interactive session aimed to help both research students and industry workers understand how to go from thesis to useable industry dataset. We see benefits for both parties:

•  For research students: A chance to interact with industry professionals, get an understanding of what data the industry uses and how to deliver a product that is truly useful to the sponsor. This understanding of how the industry works is also a key skill for the job market.

• For industry workers: Understand the constraints of an academic thesis and what is required of the student from a university. Help the current generation of students deliver a product you can use easily in your day to day work.
