A Space for Discovery - Help Shape the Next Chapter

For more than 200 years, our Lecture Theatre has been a place of discovery, learning and inspiration. However, to meet the needs of a changing world, this historic space now requires investment to support a refurbishment that will not only honour its remarkable heritage, but create a modern, accessible and sustainable venue for learning, collaboration and public engagement within the geosciences.

Why now?

Having successfully secured a 999-year lease of Burlington House in 2024, we can now focus on some much-needed improvements to our historic home, with the Lecture Theatre improvements a priority. The Audio Visual (AV) and Environmental & Mechanical (M&E) equipment are nearing the end of working life, and their much-needed replacement means work to the structure of the Lecture Theatre. Such work provides the perfect opportunity to refurbish the space with a heritage led renovation that brings back many of the historic features that lie beneath the panels, in tandem with a full modernisation to provide an accessible and sustainable place of learning for future generations.

This key project requires fundraising and grant support of an estimated £1 million and will be supported through a range of philanthropic opportunities, enabling individuals and organisations to contribute in ways that are meaningful to them. We invite our Fellows, supporters, organisations and friends of the Society to help bring this vision to life.
