Successful applicants will develop valuable engagement and outreach skills, and attendees will be eligible to apply to put those skills into practice at Green Man Festival.
Why take part?
- Gain valuable science communication skills and experience
- Enhance your CV and employability
- Meet other enthusiastic science communicators
- Have the chance to volunteer at Green Man Festival 2026
Who can apply?
This training is open to undergraduate students in science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) who are interested in climate change, the environment, sustainability, and resources. Students must be currently enrolled on a programme of study in Wales. No prior experience is required - just enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. If you are unsure whether you are “qualified enough”, we strongly encourage you to apply.
We particularly welcome applications from students who may not have had access to opportunities like this before, especially those from underrepresented groups in STEM.
About the opportunity
This training is part of a project led by Cardiff University, the British Geological Survey, and the Geological Society to strengthen trusted, evidence-based communication about climate, energy, and environmental change in Wales.
At the Green Energy Glade at Green Man Festival, we bring researchers and the public together for open, accessible conversations about climate change, renewable energy, and the resources that support society. This training will help you build the skills and confidence to deliver inclusive public engagement on emotive or complex science topics.
The workshop will be hands-on and supportive, covering how to explain complex ideas clearly, build confidence in conversation, understand your audience, make adaptations and adjustments, and respond to difficult questions.
Following the training, up to four participants will be selected to join us at Green Man Festival (21–24 August 2026). Successful candidates will support engagement activities alongside experienced researchers and science communicators, helping to create a welcoming environment for discussion and debate.
Financial assistance
We can offer support with travel, accommodation, and subsistence costs associated with attending the training. You may request this support when applying. Proof of purchase must be provided, and expenses must be claimed within one month of the training.
If you are able to cover all or part of the cost of attending, we ask that you do so, allowing us to direct funds to participants with greater financial need. If you need to leave home before 6:30 am on the day of the training, you may claim for an overnight stay. If you have extenuating circumstances requiring further support, or if you have any questions, please contact us at: education@geolsoc.org.uk
