Twelve months on from introducing 'This is Geoscience', the campaign has grown into a project spanning six continents and reaching thousands of people.

'This is Geoscience' was born out of a shared concern within our community, alongside an enduring passion for making geoscience accessible, engaging, relevant and welcoming to all. Ultimately, it aims to inspire and inform a new generation of geoscientists and reshape public perceptions of the field.

What started as a small idea, launched twelve months ago at Burlington House, has resonated well beyond the United Kingdom, reaching audiences through social media, online resources, conferences and workshops.

Our website resources, including career profiles, skills and salary information, have been accessed in 132 countries, with the United States and the United Kingdom accounting for roughly half of our users.

We’ve also made the case for geoscience beyond the virtual space. 'This is Geoscience' has been invited to present at seven international conferences across the United States and Europe, and we've reached over 2,300 teachers across the UK and Europe through talks, workshops and panel discussions.

This all shows just how much interest there is in geoscience. It also highlights the need to keep creating relatable, high-quality resources, both for young people and for those who influence or advise them on their careers, so that future geoscientists stay informed about the relevance, diversity and excitement of the discipline.

We've also had the privilege of partnering with ten organisations representing tens of thousands of geoscientists around the globe, including the American Geoscience Institute (AGI), American Geoscience Union (AGU), American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG), Eurogeologists (EFG), European Geoscience Union (EGU), the Geologists Association (GA), Get into Geoscience, Geological Society of America (GSA) and iCRAG. The Seismological Society of America (SSA) has also recently joined and will soon be adding its careers information to the campaign.

Moving forward

The campaign is just beginning. We’re always looking to refresh and build on our resources and continue expanding our horizons. We're currently working behind the scenes to add new career profiles every month, covering as many subdisciplines and career pathways as possible.

'This is Geoscience' seeks to showcase the intrinsic value of geoscience to society. It highlights the opportunities offered by a career in the field and promotes the potential of planet-focused science, particularly its relevance to tackling global challenges like climate change, environmental protection and sustainability, where geoscientists have an essential role to play.
