We are delighted to announce that the Geological Society has received its new Charter with the Crown Seal from the Crown Office.

2025 Supplemental Charter sits below the framed, original 1825 Royal Charter hung on a wall

The Charter is the Geological Society's main governing instrument, from which the Byelaws derive. The approved Supplemental Charter was printed on vellum and sealed at the Crown Office at the House of Lords, dated July 2026

This updated Charter followed a three-year review from 2022 to 2025, including consultation with Fellows and similar organisational bodies. At a Special General Meeting on 8 October 2025, the Fellowship endorsed the Geological Society's petition to the Privy Council to adopt the revised Royal Charter and approved the Bylaws, following a 98.46% vote in favour by the Fellows who took part in an independent ballot.

This new Charter will be housed in our archives and will be periodically on display at Burlington House, London, for Fellows and members to view.
