We are pleased to announce the creation of a new Australian Regional Group, an idea brought forward by Society Fellows.
This new initiative was brought forward by Craig Brock and Jonathan Durnell, two Society Fellows based in Australia who were interested in creating a local framework to connect and support other members in the country.
Both Brock and Durnell championed the idea and it was turned into reality after a consultation held with other Australian-based members and the Geological Society. They have both been appointed as Co-Chairs of a provisional committee.
The Society already has a strong, well-established presence in Australia, with over 300 members across the country. This new Regional Group seeks to represent the growing number of members in the region, providing a collective voice in terms of professional standards. It also strengthens support for local members in Australia and provides a valuable platform for networking, professional development and community building activities.
This is an important and exciting development for the Society in terms of its international presence as we welcome the Australian Regional Group alongside our Hong Kong Regional Group.
Regional Groups are assigned to members based on their postcodes. This seeks to make connections between members easier. It offers a space to share knowledge and engage with other local professionals and students across a varied programme of events and activities, including talks, social events and more.
For us, this is a meaningful step in strengthening its support beyond the UK. For members in Australia, it's a practical, local and exciting space for the geoscience community to thrive.
