The Helsby Sandstone Formation, part of the Sherwood Sandstone Group, underlies key development areas in both Birmingham and Manchester. The geological features and geotechnical properties of the formation can be challenging to investigate accurately leading to potential over design and delays to construction programmes.

Matthew Fagan-Spence draws on his experience within the Helsby Sandstone Formation to present key observations for working in the geology. These observations cover the design of ground investigations, interpretation of ground investigations as well as the design and construction of piles.
