Event overview
Hear from Dr Mark Lee at this free webinar organised by the Engineering Group of the Geological Society (EGGS) and the British Society of Geomorphology.
Geohazards are important sources of risk to onshore energy pipelines. There are, on average, around 74 geohazard-related pipeline rupture incidents around the World, per year. Over 60% of these pipeline failures are caused by landslides, with a further 22% occurring at river crossings.
This talk will illustrate the increasingly important role played by Geomorphologists in helping avoid and mitigate these risks. Dr Lee will discuss the key contributions made by Geomorphologists, including: providing specialist inputs to pipeline routing and design, construction and operation; hazard recognition and mapping; hazard and risk assessment; and and monitoring.
Examples will be provided from a variety of environments and terrains, including mountains, hot deserts and tropical rainforests.
