16 - Thursday, 25 September 2025 | 13:00 - 17:00 | Virtual,

The course is aimed at professionals working in geoengineering, geophysics, construction, or a similar field who wish to gain a better understanding of the properties of geological materials and learn the principles of predicting and visualising the three-dimensional (3D) structure of the subsurface.

3D understanding of the subsurface is essential for many applications of geoscientific fields; for example, how to understand and predict the geometry and properties of faults that might influence slope stability or influence construction projects such as windfarm foundation plans; or how the 3D structure of a mineral prospect might affect drilling plans or resource estimation.

The course is aimed at professionals working in a range of geoscientific industries, e.g. geoengineering, geophysics, construction, or a similar field where understanding of the structure of the subsurface is needed. The course is suitable for any career stage although it is envisaged to be most beneficial for early career professionals.

  1. To understand the relationships between stress, deformation, and properties of geological materials

  2. To understand how geological materials deform and form geological structures, and how these structures are expressed in three dimensions at outcrop and in the subsurface

  3. To learn how to predict three-dimensional subsurface structures from two-dimensional surface data such as geological maps

This course will be held virtually over four half-days on the following dates, starting at 13:00 BST and ending at approximately 17:00 BST:

Day 1: 16 September

Day 2: 18 September

Day 3: 23 September

Day 4: 25 September

Joining details will be sent out the day prior, alongside any course materials that may be needed.

Dr Taija Torvela CGeol

Taija graduated from Abo Akademi University, Finland, in 2000 with an MSc in Geology and mineralogy. Since then, she has built a career straddling industry and academia, having worked in consultancy, minerals exploration, and nuclear waste deposition before fully embarking on an academic career.

Now Associate Professor in Applied Structural Geology at the University of Leeds, Taija is a Higher Education professional with a HEA qualification, and Chartered Geologist (GSL, 2017). She has significant experience in training students at all levels in applied geosciences.

Taija's particular expertise is in 3D visualisation, structural geology, and mineral deposits, and she is an enthusiast for public outreach via her YouTube channel Our Metallic Earth. She regularly consults companies in the areas of her expertise, and both her teaching and research have a very strong applied, industry-relevant focus.
