Earth Science Week 2025
Each October, The Geological Society coordinates Earth Science Week in the UK, in cooperation with the American Geosciences Institute and the wider international geoscience community.
Earth Science Week promotes responsible stewardship of the Earth through celebratory events and opportunities to discover the Earth Sciences, involving community groups, educators and citizens.
Energy Resources for Our Future: Earth Science Week 2025
Earth Science Week serves as a global celebration of the Earth and planetary sciences – drawing together educators, scientists, community groups and the public to explore the planet, raise awareness of geoscience issues and inspire stewardship of the Earth. This year, from 12–18 October 2025, the Geological Society celebrated the theme Energy Resources for Our Future.
The theme invites participants to reflect on how we power our homes, businesses and transport, what choices we can make about energy, and how those choices link to environmental, social and economic impacts. The year’s theme encourages us to become informed energy consumers and to actively work towards a sustainable future that ensures a high quality of life for generations to come.
Each year, we invite organisations and individuals to host events, publicise them through our event calendar, and apply for outreach grants of up to £250 to help deliver activities during the week. These grants support grassroots Earth science outreach and ensure that Earth Science Week is visible in communities throughout the UK.
The overall purpose of Earth Science Week is to raise awareness of how geoscience underpins many critical societal issues (such as energy, resources, hazards, environment) and to encourage participation, curiosity and a sense of responsibility for the future of our planet.
Participating in Earth Science Week can look like visiting a geoscience walk or going on a fossil-hunt, attending a public lecture, engaging in a school workshop, or using the downloadable educational resources to support learning and engagement in your local area. Whether you’re a teacher, student, professional or simply curious about the Earth under our feet and how we choose to power our future, Earth Science Week 2025 provided a week full of resources, activities and reflection.
These are just some of the events which took place this year:
GEOFEST with the Dorset Geologist’s Association Group
GEOFEST was a day celebrating all aspects of geoscience from fossils to rocks and everything in between. Members of the Dorset Geologist’s Association Group and some invited guests exhibited their geoscience collections and invited attendees to bring their burning questions or puzzling rocks and fossils!

Through hands-on activities, including building wind turbines and solar panel robots using building kits and household items, the South West Regional Group of The Geological Society explored renewable energy concepts with Cubs aged 8 – 10. The event invited discussion about Earth science, energy sources, and how our choices impact the planet.
Girl Guiding Energy! with the South Wales Girlguides
Through hands-on activities with LEGO kits the Girlguides designed and built models of wind turbines while learning about the science and engineering principles behind renewable energy and construction. This interactive and creative format hoped to make complex concepts accessible and help young people see the tangible impact Earth scientists have on addressing climate change, energy security, and infrastructure development.
Unearthed: A forum of Fossils, Fieldwork and Female Voices at the Mendip Rocks Festival
Mendip Rocks is an annual festival that hosts a series of geological events during the autumn in October to celebrate the fascinating 450-million-year history of the Mendip Hills. The festival involves the local community in experiencing our beautiful landscape and understanding the story of the Mendips. This special lecture was a focal point in this year’s festival, crafted to shine a light on the pioneering work of women in the field of palaeontology.
Geopoetry at the Canterbury Festival (November 2024)
For the past three years, geologist, Helen Nattrass and poet, Victoria Field have offered a day of creative writing inspired by different aspects of geology as part of the Canterbury Festival’s Umbrella Programme. This event offers an opportunity to place
the Earth at the centre of people’s experience and develop heightened awareness combining knowledge and the senses. Events like this one seek to overcome the separation of mind and body and of humans from the natural world. Although not during Earth Science Week this year, the principles of artistic interpretation and creativity make this event one worth celebrating nonetheless.
Earth Science Week at The Geological Society
As a Society, we celebrate Earth Science Week by hosting a variety of outreach and public engagements events for all ages. In the past, this has been through film screenings, free Earth science family fun days, artistic competitions and science communication masterclasses.
Last chance to celebrate Earth Science Week with a fun day of activities and a free screening of Monsters, Inc. (2001)!
Your last chance to celebrate Earth Science Week is coming up on 31 October with a day of family friendly fun for kids aged 7 – 12. Drop in to our headquarters at Burlington House (W1J 0BG) and take part in fun educational activities all about energy from 10:00 until 14:15. Come and explore all the ways we, like the Monsters of Monstropolis, are changing the way we will power our future!
You can also enjoy a free screening of Monsters, Inc. (2001) however booking is required, and tickets are limited. Book now to secure your spot!
