The Geological Society of London User Licence 1.1

The Geological Society of London has exclusive rights to the content in The Geological Society of London's journals and books, including, but not limited to, the rights to reproduce, store, adapt, publish, distribute, display, communicate to the public and make available in paper, electronic and other formats/media in perpetuity. The Geological Society of London grants a licence to users to use the articles on the basis of the terms below. Authors also retain certain rights, as set out below.

User Rights

License to users  Non-exclusive from The Geological Society of London for research, teaching, private study. Not commercial use.
Licensed rights  Retrieve, display, download and print out copies of individual articles.

Any individual or organisation may reproduce or re-use three items (i.e. figures, tables or extracts of fewer than 100 words) from the Lyell Collection without requesting formal permission from the Geological Society, without charge. The Society will treat this as fair use or fair dealing.
Copies  All copies must acknowledge and reference the original, including DOI, and refer to The Geological Society of London as publisher.

Downloaded articles are for the use of the individual and may not be posted on any internal or institutional website or intranet, nor may they be posted on any site where external access is possible. Specifically, articles may not be posted on any institutional or subject-focused repository.

Downloaded articles may not be copied physically or electronically for any onward distribution, and may not be emailed to other individuals or organisations who do not enjoy Lyell Collection access in their own right. Downloaded articles, parts of articles (including abstracts and references) or derivatives of articles may not be used for any commercial purpose or for personal gain without the explicit permission of the Geological Society.

Author rights (within 12 month embargo period)

Posting on author’s website                      Only Author’s original (pre-peer reviewed version). Must link to the published article on The Geological Society of London’s publications website.
 Teaching Use by Author and their academic institution for teaching students.

You may make limited hard copies of an article for your own research or educational purposes (not including course packs) if you have access rights to the material. You do not need to request permission to do this.

For more extensive copying or digital reproduction, you need to obtain a licence from the Copyright Licensing Agency or the Copyright Clearance Center or from your local reproduction rights agency.

You may include material from Society copyright in a visual presentation if you have access rights to the material and provided that you will not circulate digital or hard copies of your presentation. You do not need to request permission to do this.

If you wish to circulate copies of your presentation to students or others, please obtain ‘course-pack’ permission from the Copyright Licensing Agency or the Copyright Clearance Center or from your local reproduction rights agency.
Inclusion in thesis or thesis repository  Only Author’s original (pre-peer reviewed version). Must acknowledge and reference the original article, including DOI, and link to the published article on The Geological Society of London’s publications website.
Data contained in article  Upon publication by The Geological Society of London only. May use data and other information contained in the article in other articles of author. Must acknowledge and reference the original article, including DOI, and link to the published article on The Geological Society of London’s publications website. 
Subject or institutional repository  If mandated by funder. Must link to the published article on The Geological Society of London’s publications website.
