The Western Regional Group of the Geological Society recently held three highly sought after evening trips to the Clifton Suspension Bridge vaults, attended by 45 members in total.
Starting at the Museum on the Leigh Woods side of the bridge the group were given a short history of the bridge design by a knowledgeable guide before descending into two of the twelve vaulted chambers inside the Leigh Woods abutment discovered in 2002. Members were astonished by the sheer size of the vaults on entry with the largest vault being 11m high and 17m wide.
The group admired the straw stalactites and learnt about how the abutments were constructed back in 1836.
For those that missed the trip, tours can be organised through the Clifton Suspension Bridge website.
