On Saturday 17 January 2026, the Hong Kong Regional Group co-organised with the Geological Society of Hong Kong a Family STEM visit to the Community Liaison Centre for the Trunk Road T2 and Cha Kwo Ling Tunnel development, which is part of a recent major infrastructure development in Hong Kong. The Route 6 forms part of Hong Kong’s strategic road network linking West Kowloon, the Cruise Terminal, the Kai Tak Development, the Kowloon East Central Business District to the residential and industrial developments in Tseung Kwan O in the East. During peak hours, it is anticipated that the journey time will be substantially shortened from about 65 minutes now to 12 minutes upon completion.

As part of the Hong Kong Regional Group's continuous outreach efforts, they organised this event so members can enjoy with their family while learning about the geology and engineering of the project. They were also also introduced to potential career pathways in engineering geology in Hong Kong. From interactive AR/VR demonstrations to hands-on tunnel segment puzzles, the STEM workshop brought cutting edge tunnel engineering and construction to the classroom! One of the most impressive features was the immersive 360° screen that simulated a real Tunnel Boring Machine experience! And in celebration of the upcoming Lunar New Year, a booth with Chinese calligraphy allowed participants to write a few celebratory messages for the new year!

Special thanks to the Civil Engineering & Development Department and the project team of Trunk Road T2 and Cha Kwo Ling for their hospitality and insightful introduction to the project.
