The Western Regional Group is pleased to welcome Matt Cook from Mott MacDonald, who will delve into the stratigraphy and depositional environments of the Western London Basin.

This talk will begin with an examination of the major geological units, starting from the Chalk and moving upwards through the Lambeth Group, the Thames Group, and finally the Quaternary deposits. Special emphasis will be placed on the latest findings from deep boreholes in the Reading area, which have provided new insights into these formations.

Matt will explain how the basin's edge location impacts soil composition and behaviour, contrasting these characteristics with those found in Central London. He will demonstrate that through analysis of core samples, we can uncover key clues about the geological history and processes at play.

Additionally, the talk will address the crucial role of geologists in the construction industry, and discuss strategies for improving communication with contractors, designers, and clients, highlighting the importance of geological interpretation and the development of comprehensive ground models. This will underscore the value that geologists bring to projects, ensuring better-informed decision-making and more successful outcomes.

The talk will begin at 6.30pm, with doors (and the Zoom 'room') opening at 6pm.
