17 June 2025 | 19:00 - 21:00 | In-person at The Tasting Room, Greene King Brewery, Westgate Street, Bury St Edmunds IP33 1QG, or online via Microsoft Teams
Join our East Anglian Regional Group at the Green King Brewery in Bury St Edmunds for an evening lecture by Professor Kevin Hiscock.
This talk will explore the relationship between the colour and taste of European beers as determined by the chemical character of water used in the brewing process. From Dublin to Burton-upon-Trent to Prague, reliable and good quality water has been obtained from aquifers, and rock-water interaction has determined the type of beer that is brewed.
Professor Hiscock will also give a brief history of the brewing industry, describe the stages of the brewing process, and highlight where beer is currently produced and consumed. Lastly, an illustrated tour of the so-called ‘beer belt’ of Europe will demonstrate the relationship between geology and the type of beer in your glass!
There will also be the opportunity for in-person attendees to sample some of the Greene King Brewery beers during the event and one free drink per Geological Society Member will be available (on production of proof of membership).
Those who are unable to attend in-person can watch the presentation online via Microsoft Teams.
