The 'Fookes Meeting for Engineering Geology' (FMEG) will be held every two years by the Geological Society, by virtue of a generous donation from Mrs Edna Fookes in memory of Peter Fookes, FGS.
Each FMG will be developed with a thematic focus aligned to our Geohazards, Geoengineering & Georesilience Science Theme, in collaboration with the wider community via our Engineering Group (EGGS) and supported by Geological Society staff.
The meeting programme has been designed to appeal to undergraduate and postgraduate students, academic researchers and those working in applied practice, with the aim to foster stronger networks and new collaborations between the Engineering Geology community and allied professions and sectors, with a particular focus on supporting early-career members of this community.
Thanks to the generous donation in Peter Fookes' name, the meeting will be free to attend for all GSL Fellows and Student Fellows (with a delegate fee for non-Fellows). The two-day hybrid event will be held in person but will also be available remotely to involve an international audience as well as those who can't get to London in person.
The inaugural meeting will combine two keynote speakers, panel discussions with invited guests, networking sessions with industry professionals, poster presentations, and a student competition alongside the main scientific programme that we anticipate will have speakers from across applied practice, academia, and government.

The Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology (QJEGH) is collaborating with the Engineering Group of the Geological Society on the 'Fookes Meeting for Engineering Geology' and wishes to extend an invite to presenters at the conference to submit a written-up version of their talk to the journal.
QJEGH welcomes a range of article types, such as case studies and technical notes. Depending on the level of interest, the opportunity to contribute to a dedicated thematic collection on the meeting topic will be available. For more info please contact the QJEGH editorial team, or visit the Geological Society stand at the event itself.
Contours and curves: charting the topography of a career in geoscience
Dr Maria Holloway-Strong is a Principal Engineering Geologist with AtkinsRéalis. She has more than 20 years’ experience in ground engineering and is both a Chartered Engineer and Chartered Geologist, as well as a certified expert witness. Maria is Chair of the Ground Engineering Advisory Panel for CIRIA, serves on the Ground Engineering Subgroup (GES) of IOM3, is a committee member of Women In Materials, Minerals and Mining (WIM3) of IOM3, and has previously served as a committee member of the Engineering Group of the Geological Society. Maria was the winner of the 2021 Atkins Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Award and the 2025 winner of the WISE STEM Returner of the Year Award. She is a people manager to a team of geologists and engineers in the early stages of their careers and is a single mother to three young adults.

Keeping feet on the ground: engineering geological and geomorphological mapping as an essential component of landslide hazard assessments and ground engineering – case studies from mountainous terrain in Asia-Pacific
Jonathan Hart is an Engineering Geologist with over 30 years’ experience in the fields of engineering geology, engineering geomorphology and geotechnical engineering. He co-founded GeoRisk Solutions Ltd. in Hong Kong in 2007, specialising in landslide hazard assessments, landslide investigation, slope stability and stabilization, and mountain road engineering. Based in Hong Kong, Jonathan has worked extensively in both Hong Kong and Philippines and has undertaken geotechnical projects in UK, Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Ethiopia. He is a Chartered Geologist with the Geological Society of London, and a visiting lecturer and co-ordinator for course GEOS8104 in Landslides and Landslide Hazard Assessments under the MSc in Applied Geoscience at the University of Hong Kong.
Considering resilience in design for linear infrastructure subject to the effects of natural hazards
Jean Hutchinson is a Professor Emerita of Geological Engineering at Queen’s University and the Vice President of Innovative Geomechanics Inc.
Dr. Hutchinson’s engineering focus has been on integrating geological knowledge into geomechanics for underground and surface mining, mine closure planning, transportation corridor hazard assessment and risk management, and landslide monitoring and risk management. Jean has been privileged to introduce thousands of students to the possibilities of careers in these topics, and to equip them with the tools to engage with these challenges, technically and societally.
Throughout her career, Jean has been an advocate for diversity and inclusivity in engineering. through public speaking, EDI advisory roles with several learned societies, developing and leading EDI training workshops for undergraduate students and publishing papers on these topics.
Dr. Hutchinson is pleased to serve on the Technical Review Boards of several organizations, including Rio Tinto’s Bingham Canyon Mine and Hong Kong. She has been the grateful recipient of a number of awards and medals, including the Glossop Medal (2019), Manuel Rocha Lecture (2025), John B. Stirling Medal (2024) and Canadian Pacific Railway Medal (2017). Jean was honoured to be elected as a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada in 2011 and the Canadian Academy of Engineering in 2020.
Digital Foundations: My Career Journey from Ground Models to Nuclear Digital Solutions
Stephanie Boffey-Rawlings is a Chartered Geologist who has transitioned her career into the Nuclear Sector, while continuing to draw on the expertise and insights gained from her geological background. Starting out in the geosciences, Stephanie developed strong technical skills using advanced software and digital tools to support engineering projects. Her hands-on experience in overcoming the challenges of early technology adoption has shaped her passion for driving innovation and guiding organisations through digital transformation. Today, she champions the use of industry-leading tools to improve collaboration, efficiency, and decision-making across complex engineering environments.
