24 February 2026 | 12:00 - 13:00 | Virtual

The Energy Transition: Opportunities for Geoscientists webinar series convenes leaders from academia, industry, and government to spotlight where geoscientists can help to accelerate a responsible, investable transition. Each one-hour session (with brief audience Q&A) focuses on career pathways, transferable skills and the practical collaborations needed to deliver impact at scale. The series builds on our 2021 webinars and the 2022 Energy & Material Transition Discussion Meeting, linking those insights to today’s projects and markets.

Across the series we will:

  • Discuss existing and future opportunities for geoscientists across renewable energy, subsurface storage, geothermal, heat management, infrastructure re-use, minerals and nuclear industries
  • Explore career transitions and skills transfer, highlighting routes from legacy sectors into growth areas.
  • Share examples of data gathering, methods and monitoring advances that de-risk projects.
  • Strengthen multi-disciplinary working with engineering, policy, finance, and communities.

This webinar will take place virtually on Zoom. Joining instructions will be shared once you have registered via Zoom.

Bas Spaargaren
Energy Transition Strategic Science Theme Lead, The Geological Society

Bas has over 32 years of geoscience experience in the Energy Industry, having worked for Shell, Woodside and CNOOC International in a variety of senior management roles in Exploration, Appraisal, Development, Commercial and Business Development. His last role with CNOOC was as Vice President Exploration for Europe & Africa, based in London.
Since leaving CNOOC in 2022, Bas has been a Business Development Consultant for EnQuest UK, via his own company Superb Energy. Bas has a B.Sc. in Physics (with Geophysics) and a PhD in Lower Crustal Seismology from Imperial College.

For the last 5 years, Bas has also volunteered as a mentor for A-level students at Surrey SATRO, a STEM educational charity. He runs an annual project on “The Global Energy Transition”. Earlier this year, he became the Energy Transition Theme Lead for The Geological Society, which is a part-time voluntary role.

Bas has a passion for the Earth Sciences and developing people to maximise their impact on the Energy Transition.

Vicky Catterall Headshot

Lead Expert Geophysics & Hydrography, RWE Renewables UK

Vicky is the Lead Expert for Geophysics and Hydrography at RWE, where she specialises in offshore wind development. She holds a joint honours BSc in Geology and Physical Geography, an MSc in Oceanography, and a PhD focusing on submarine slope systems, shallow hazards, and 3D seismic interpretation. Following her PhD studies, she worked 11 years in the oil and gas sector at ExxonMobil, gaining extensive experience in global exploration and development across both new ventures and operational projects. Since transitioning to the offshore wind sector, she has held senior and lead roles at RWE for nearly five years. Her technical leadership has been instrumental in the integration of 3D seismic data into site characterization and ground models. Her current work focuses on strategic geoscience data management and innovation projects. Within the industry, Vicky engages in knowledge sharing, co-convening the Geological Society’s offshore wind conferences.

Helen Povey (1)

Associate Director, Geoscience, WSP

Helen Povey is an Associate Director of Geoscience at WSP, where she leads offshore wind projects for their geoscience team. With a background in subsurface characterisation, seismic interpretation, and ground modelling, she has contributed to complex offshore wind projects by adapting advanced modelling techniques from other industries. Helen has worked in a variety of roles, both technical and managerial across offshore wind, oil and gas, and geothermal sectors. She transitioned from oil and gas to join Ørsted as a STEM Returner via a career break working in education. At Ørsted she worked as a Senior Geologist, specialising in ground model development and the interpretation of subsurface data. She received the EqualEngineers Returner of the Year Award for supporting others make the same STEM Returner transition and her commitments to outreach in geoscience education.

Nicola Dakin

Senior Marine Geoscientist, BGS

Nicola Dakin is a Marine Geoscientist at the British Geological Survey, specialising in seabed and sub-surface characterisation to support offshore energy and infrastructure projects. Her work focuses on integrating geological, geotechnical and geophysical data to improve understanding of complex marine environments, reducing risk for engineering and development. Nicola plays a role in advancing knowledge critical to the energy transition, including offshore wind and subsea cable networks, by developing chronostratigraphic frameworks and regional screening tools for the offshore environment. With expertise in sedimentology and stratigraphy, she contributes to projects that underpin sustainable energy solutions and the resilience of critical infrastructure
