Earth and mineral pigments are natural colourants derived from minerals with a strong body colours. These pigments are created by grinding minerals into fine powders, typically producing stable, lightfast colours when mixed with a binding medium to produce paints. From cave paintings to contemporary art, earth and mineral pigments have contributed significantly to historical visual culture and they remain relevant in conservation, archaeology, and fine art up to the present day.
